awakening asaph is a project of the Maltese Diocesan Youth Commission (KDZ)
Who is Asaph? He is the father of all musicians, an inspired musician who lived in Jerusalem some 3,000 years ago.
He understood that God made music; and thus music can only exist to praise God. The sons of Asaph were known as a class of poets and singers who recognised Asaph as their master. They were responsible for the revival of music during King David’s reign.
‘Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the Lord with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped’. [2 chronicles 29,30]
‘Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was: Of the sons of Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of asaph under the hands of Asaph, which prophesied according to the order of the king’. [1 chronicles 25, 1-2]
Awakeningasaph is a concept that has been flourishing in the underground scene for quite some time now. Christian bands have written music, played music and recorded music with an inspired message to be the light bearers and inspiration to the new generation. Recognition is not what they strive for. But now is the time to awaken asaph and to let everyone hear the sound of heaven. This sound will find a way to break through the layers of darkness and will shine for years to come. Awakening asaph is a concept that will help Christian bands to come together and share their experience and music.
It was a musical journey and a spiritual one. Various local Christian bands had come together year after year to take part in what is known as the World Youth Day official song Contest organized by KDZ (Diocesan Youth Commission). Each year
KDZ invited local Christian bands to write a song on the theme chosen by the Holy Father for the particular year. The songs were then performed during a concert featuring the participating bands, from which one song would be chosen as the theme song for the year. The following were the themes and chosen songs of the last three years:
2006 – THE WORD – meta jaqa d-dlam [fyc crossbows]
2007 - LOVE ONE ANOTHER - imħabba bis-sens [d-extremes]
2008 - THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT - hu magħna llum [quicksand]
2009 – OUR HOPE IN THE LIVING GOD – tamitna fih [counterbalance & roberta]
2010 – GOOD TEACHER, WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE? - għażiż għalliem [rise]
